Chapter 24 Fireworks in the Snowstorm
Chapter 24 Fireworks in the Snowstorm
"The weather is getting colder and colder!"
"They've been gone for over two hours, and I'm a little worried!"
Inside the bus, Lin Haiyao and Chen Xiaoyu huddled together, shivering and trying to keep warm.
As the class monitor, Lin Haiyao was quite concerned about the safety of the boys who went out to explore the way. She worried that they would not be able to find their way, that they would get lost, and that they might encounter some unpredictable dangers.
After all, this is a mountainous area.
"There shouldn't be any problems, right?"
"They were all dressed warmly and had brought food to replenish their energy."
Chen Xiaoyu's situation is better. The thick down jacket she originally wore for the sake of taking photos has now become her lifeline, at least preventing her from burning more calories in a short period of time.
At this moment, Lin Haiyao was holding Chen Xiaoyu, who was like a koala, and wouldn't let go for a moment.
"With the mountainous area and blizzard, the temperature at night will drop to around minus twenty degrees Celsius."
"Although the bus can block some of the cold air, its insulation effect is ultimately very poor. Tonight, the temperature inside the bus will drop below zero, or even lower."
"We didn't bring much food, and it mostly consisted of snacks, which isn't good for keeping warm."
Lin Haiyao covered her head and face with a scarf, and tucked her hands into her sleeves to minimize the area of her body exposed to the air. Then she said to Chen Xiaoyu with a worried expression.
The temperature inside the car kept dropping, and Lin Haiyao felt her thoughts gradually coming to a standstill.
This is a very dangerous sign.
Hypothermia is a deadly danger for people outdoors.
"Have a piece of chocolate, then take a nap."
"We need to conserve as much energy as possible."
Chen Xiaoyu took out a piece of chocolate, broke it in half, handed one half to Lin Haiyao, and ate the other half herself.
"Little Fish, you're so kind!"
"What would I do without you?"
Lin Haiyao chewed on chocolate, rested her head on Chen Xiaoyu's shoulder, and said with deep emotion.
She was a very carefree person and didn't bring any food with her when she came. By this time, she was cold and hungry, and if it weren't for Chen Xiaoyu feeding her, she would have given up long ago.
Then, Lin Haiyao felt restless and started fidgeting in her seat.
"What's wrong with you?"
Chen Xiaoyu noticed her behavior and asked her with some confusion.
"I need to pee."
Lin Haiyao bit Chen Xiaoyu's ear shyly and whispered something.
"Then I'll go with you!"
Chen Xiaoyu looked at the still raging snow outside and was worried that Lin Haiyao would have trouble getting out of the car alone, so he took the initiative to offer his help.
So the two of them got out of the car and, braving the blizzard, carefully went around to the back of the vehicle.
The snow in the ravine was quite thick, and no one knew what the situation was like down there, so the two of them dared not go far.
"Hurry up, it's so cold in here!"
Chen Xiaoyu said to Lin Haiyao.
"Uh-huh."
Lin Haiyao naturally wouldn't object. In fact, she already regretted coming out and just wanted to quickly resolve the memory issue and get back to the relatively warm car.
Chen Xiaoyu looked up at the night sky, which was reflecting light due to the heavy snow and seemed much brighter than usual.
The snowflakes were swept up by the storm and raged aimlessly in the air.
Suddenly, a cold wind blew by, blinding her. Snowflakes lashed her face like sharp knives, stinging her cheeks.
Along with the cold wind, Chen Xiaoyu seemed to hear someone calling out.
"Lin Haiyao, listen, isn't someone shouting?"
Chen Xiaoyu listened intently and heard a faint sound coming from the cold wind. She then excitedly tugged at Lin Haiyao's clothes and said...
"I'm freezing!"
"My butt feels like it's not even mine anymore, where's the sound coming from?"
Lin Haiyao was shivering from the cold, but at least her brain wasn't damaged. However, unlike Chen Xiaoyu, she didn't hear any calls.
After pulling up her pants, Lin Haiyao turned her head and listened carefully, and sure enough, she heard some noises.
"Someone's coming!"
"Little fish, someone's come to rescue us!"
After confirming this, the two girls jumped up excitedly, as if the biting cold wind was no longer so scary.
The two of them shouted in the direction the sound came from, but their weak voices sounded so pale and powerless in the blizzard.
"I've got an idea!"
Chen Xiaoyu suddenly remembered that there were two firework stacks left by the driver in the luggage compartment of the bus, which he planned to keep for his son to see at home on the Lantern Festival.
……
"Young man."
"I told you, it's our duty to come out in this freezing weather, what are you trying to achieve by coming along?"
Liu Weiwei was wearing a thick military overcoat, a cotton hat resembling a train engine, and matching cotton gloves. Despite this, his cheeks were already red from the cold.
He didn't have to personally participate in the rescue work tonight, but Deputy Director Liu thought that this was the first important task personally arranged by his leader after he became the mayor, so how could he, as the de facto chief secretary, not be present at the scene?
Besides, it concerns the lives of more than twenty high school students, and it happened during the Spring Festival. Who knows how much social impact it might have? He wanted to be on the front line and try to gain an edge for his advancement.
"Those are all my classmates."
"My childhood friend is in there. Now that I know about this, how can I remain indifferent?"
While playing the search sound through the charging megaphone, Ye Kai listened carefully to the surroundings for any movement during the intervals.
The blizzard was so intense that it was difficult to hear anything more than a hundred meters away, which made him very anxious.
Perhaps by tomorrow during the day, the snow will lessen, their search and rescue visibility will improve, and they will be able to find the wrecked bus and rescue the students.
But in that case, Chen Xiaoyu and her friends would have to endure the cold night alone and helplessly, and the injured students would suffer worse injuries due to lack of timely treatment, and might even die.
This is not a good outcome, either publicly or privately.
"Want to have a cigarette to warm up?"
Liu Weiwei lit a cigarette and put it in his mouth, habitually deferring to Ye Kai.
"Please, I'm still a minor."
Ye Kai exhaled a puff of white mist, a gesture of respect and distance.
"what?"
Why did the night sky suddenly become so bright?
Liu Weiwei took two deep drags on his cigarette, instantly perking up, and then suddenly muttered to himself.
When he looked up, he saw the night sky not far away becoming brighter, flashing intermittently.
"It's fireworks!"
"Someone's setting off fireworks!"
"That's giving us directions!"
Ye Kai keenly sensed what it was and immediately became excited.
Fireworks rose into the night sky one after another, but they didn't make much of a commotion in the blizzard; even their sound seemed faint and muffled, but they did point the way.
A dozen minutes later, Chen Xiaoyu and Lin Haiyao, who were frozen like snowmen, finally saw the beam of light from the powerful flashlights being waved by the rescue team members.
When the person at the front lifted the windproof mask off his face, Chen Xiaoyu was stunned.
"Brother Ye Kai?!"
