Chapter 35 Night Song
Chapter 35 Night Song
A beautiful voice that defies description.
The singing was extremely soft and gentle, as if it were being sung in the distance or whispered in one's ear.
That was a beautiful voice that Xiu Qi had never heard before; the syllables were ethereal and melodious, and the tune was simple yet reached straight to the soul.
The song carries a hint of sadness, endless longing, and a captivating tenderness.
It involuntarily evokes the most beautiful and peaceful moments in life—
Longing for one's hometown, memories of family, or perhaps a yearning for something never experienced before?
Xiuqi opened his eyes.
In a state of shallow meditation, his perception is extremely sharp.
The moment the song began, the arcane field around him trembled slightly.
A burning sensation came from his arms; it was the newly enhanced one-star purple card, [Princess Alice], seemingly giving him a silent reminder.
"What is that sound?"
Xiuqi placed his hand on the hilt of his sword, frowning as he looked down at the forest on the gentle slope.
Down the gentle slope, figures around the campfire were awakened one after another.
"What's that yelling noise?! It's giving me a headache!"
The orc Shattered Bones jumped off the sleeping bag, his massive body knocking over the water bag next to him.
His eyes were wide open, and the area around them was now filled with alarming blood vessels; heavy white breath was billowing from his nostrils.
His rugged face was contorted with a mixture of irritability, pain, and a kind of fanatical rage. He clutched his head with both hands, as if something was churning inside.
"Shut up! Shut up!" he roared into the depths of the gray fog.
"Stay calm, break bones!" That was Captain Ryan's shout.
The captain had already stood up, his hands, white between his fingers, gripping the longbow tightly, but his eyes were not as resolute as his shout.
Raine's eyes seemed unfocused, staring blankly into the void. His lips moved slightly, as if he were talking to himself or whispering to someone unseen.
"...Ha...haha..." The orc suddenly let out a strange laugh, shaking his head violently as if trying to shake the sound out.
"This is so annoying! Shut the hell up!" His breathing grew heavier and heavier, and his face was completely covered with fanaticism.
"Bonebreaker, calm down!" A small figure emerged from the shadows beside them, and the dwarf Bucky grabbed the orc's leg.
Bucky's face was unnaturally pale, and beads of sweat were constantly seeping from his forehead, but his eyes still held a clear gaze as he tried to wake the other person.
"Wake up, Bonebreaker! That sound is very strange!"
"Get out of my way, you little dwarf!" The burly orc shoved the dwarf aside and turned toward the source of the sound, his face filled with madness and ferocity.
"I heard it! It's mocking me... mocking me for being a penniless nobody... nothing at all, ha ha!!!"
As soon as he finished speaking, the orc picked up his giant axe and, like an enraged bull, strode forward with heavy steps, smashing through the bushes in his path and charging into the depths of the gray fog.
"Damn it, that idiot!" Dwarf Bucky cursed as he got up, his expression shifting as he watched the orc's figure disappear into the gray mist.
He glanced at the captain's solemn expression again, and finally gritted his teeth.
"Captain, I'll go get him!"
After saying that, the dwarf's short figure disappeared into the night, and with a few nimble leaps, he silently followed the direction of the broken bones and slipped into the forest.
"Wait, Bucky, don't..." Captain Ryan was about to stop him, but before he could finish, the dwarf had already disappeared.
The captain's stiffly raised arm remained raised, his eyes seemed somewhat unfocused, and his face appeared unusually pale in the flickering campfire, even trembling slightly.
His gaze would occasionally drift, as if passing through layers of dense forest and landing on some distant place—
A dilapidated but very tidy wooden cabin, a faint fire flickering in the fireplace, and on a wooden bed against the wall, a pale yet childlike face, forcing a smile, gazes at him...
"Don't be afraid... Daddy's here with you..." Ryan's lips moved silently. "The medicine, Daddy will buy it soon..."
His right foot missed a step, and he staggered and fell to the ground. He seemed to wake up with a start, and cold sweat kept seeping from his back.
Just then, the captain heard a rapid and chaotic chanting of incantations—
She is Ellie, a mage apprentice.
Her situation seems to be worse.
As a highly intelligent spellcaster with a affinity for arcane power, she experiences far greater mental shocks than others.
"No...don't come any closer...it wasn't me...it wasn't me who stole it..." The mage apprentice Ellie clung tightly to the oak staff, her body curled up on the ground, trembling uncontrollably.
Two streams of tears flowed from her tightly closed eyes, and she mumbled incoherently.
The singing seemed to be stirring up memories she least wanted to touch.
Ellie suddenly raised her staff and screamed at the empty space in front of her:
"Light Spell!"
A faint point of light began to expand in the darkness before her, then quickly burst open—
In an instant, a bright light dispelled the surrounding darkness, but after the light faded, it was quickly enveloped by endless darkness again.
The female mage apprentice's eyes dimmed.
"It's no use...not enough...let's try again!"
She tried again, and only when the ball of light appeared could she slightly dispel some of the darkness in her heart, but it was all in vain.
The female apprentice was frantically performing the two magic tricks she knew, trying to dispel the illusions in her mind.
Excessive spellcasting caused her magic to spill out like a burst dam, turning her face pale and leaving her as frail as a candle in the wind.
"Ellie! Stop right now, your magic will run out!" Captain Rein warned.
At this moment, the female apprentice was completely immersed in her own fear and had no reaction to the outside world.
"Flame...fire arrow! I will...!"
She gestured wildly with her hands, trying to construct a spell she had not yet mastered.
The result was self-evident: the woman, whose mental energy was already depleted, suffered a terrible backlash.
"Well!"
The female apprentice let out a painful groan, and the staff she had been holding high instantly fell limply to the ground, accompanied by a convulsion.
He completely lost consciousness.
Almost instantly, only Xiuqi, Rein, and the unconscious Ellie remained in the entire camp.
Xiu Qi forced himself to calm down, and with a surge of thought, a warm spiritual energy emanated from the meditation stone on his chest and instantly spread throughout his body.
Finally, it converged in his sea of consciousness, as if he were enveloped by a warm embrace, driving away those manic and uneasy negative emotions.
He stood on the gentle slope, one hand on the hilt of his sword, gazing toward the source of the sound deep in the gray fog.
The night, like a giant gray beast, slowly swallowed the entire forest.
There was no sound coming from the direction where the orcs and dwarves had disappeared.
Captain Ryan knelt on the ground, his arms outstretched as if to embrace something, his tear-streaked face contorted with extreme pain.
Xiuqi tried to go down to check on Rein's condition, but was stopped by a gentle and loving voice.
"Shuqi!"
That long-lost, familiar voice, as soft as a feather, pierced through the dense forest and reached his ears clearly.
Upon hearing that voice, he trembled violently and uncontrollably, as if struck by lightning.
His previously expressionless face was now filled with extreme shock and longing.
"This voice...it can't be..."
"You...are...not..."
His lips moved numbly, his arms suddenly dropped, and a single tear, barely visible in the moonlight, slid from the corner of his eye, hidden by his long black hair.
But her body seemed completely out of her control, slowly... slowly...
Turn around...
