Chapter 3 Little Nose Arrives in the Land of Giants
Chapter 3 Little Nose Arrives in the Land of Giants
Bo Chunyu walked with difficulty, her eyes glazed over, her hands clutching a huge suitcase. She muttered incessantly, providing all the support for her limbs except for assistance. One moment she was saying, "I don't believe this old man is eighty-six years old! You're eighty-six, and I'm still talking nonsense!" The next moment she was saying, "Bo Caiyan, your grandma is going to chop you into mincemeat and not a single inch of soft bone will be left on you."
Suddenly, a particularly dazzling light appeared not far above, resembling some kind of high-powered searchlight. The funnel-shaped light crossed three mountain ridges, swayed for a while, and finally pointed straight at the dark clouds, igniting a sincere warm color in the snowflakes.
Bo Chunyu stared blankly for a moment, feeling his heart, which had been completely broken, suddenly release from the mental exhaustion and panic. He felt a lightness in his body and hands, and then his suitcase and backpack were already in the hands of that extremely burly old man, like a wild man carrying a quail. He turned around and muttered in a particularly rough old man's voice, "The young master really came back."
Sensing the change in attitude, the pent-up frustration from the past few dozen hours finally broke free and exploded: "Waaah! Why would I lie to you! I took three international flights to get back! I couldn't even get a taxi at the airport! Do you know how much it cost me to take a taxi to this desolate place?! Three hundred and seventy! Waaah! Three hundred and seventy yuan could have made me stuffed to death! Stuffed myself to death! And here, not a single person is willing to take me up the mountain! It's not like I'm not willing to pay! Who would come to a place like this on New Year's Eve if they weren't in a hurry! Waaah! And you're yelling at me! Why would a teenage girl like me lie to you?"
Eighth Master was silent for a while: "A dozen or so?"
Bo Chunyu froze, stammering and then fiercely demanding, "Twenty-seven! What?!"
Eighth Master said slowly, "Wipe them off, or you won't be able to open your eyes if your eyelashes get frozen for a while."
Bo Chunyu was in despair, but what was even more despairing was that even though the wild old man was dressed like a bear and carrying a huge suitcase and an equally huge backpack, he was still walking briskly. She couldn't catch up with him even though he left half a foot deep footprints. His face, which was covered by several layers of masks and scarves, was wet inside and frozen outside, and even his breathing was compressed and intermittent.
"How...how much further...sir!"
"How far is 'soon'?"
"Damn... this road is really something... why does it seem like it's all winding?"
At 10:49:28, Eighth Master pushed open the door of the house. Instantly, the air was filled with a misty, ethereal atmosphere, with hot and cold air clashing like a fairyland. Bo Chunyu rolled in, and Kuci landed headfirst on the soft doormat.
Eighth Master took off his large fur cloak, hung it on the clothes rack by the door, and nodded towards the inside: "Young Master!"
Lu Chi said, "There's tea hanging over the fireplace, pour yourself some."
Eighth Master glanced at Qiao Shao and the others, who had suddenly stood ramrod straight with their hands covered in white powder, then walked over to pour tea. He asked slowly and in a low voice, "We've been waiting for over three hours. Is this the person you're looking for? He looks a bit silly to me."
"You...you...you're the idiot!"
Bo Chunyu, buried in her own clothes, struggled to her feet. The floorboards made no creaking noises, and the wood was visibly thick and solid. Before her eyes was a large hall made entirely of giant stone, exceptionally spacious and with an astonishingly high ceiling. The four walls were decorated with antlers, bones, stone and wood, and there was even a tree in the corner of the hall that was at least four or five people could hug. In short, it highlighted a rugged, primitive, wild and unruly atmosphere, making Bo Chunyu feel as if she had come to some kind of giant country.
"You...you guys..." It felt as natural and seamless as a scene from a medieval ghost castle reenacting the Spring Festival Gala's dumpling-making performance. Bo Chunyu immediately became cautious, opening her mouth to ask, "Where is Bo Caiyan?"
In the center of the lobby was a long, solid wood table; yes, they were really making dumplings.
"Her brain doesn't seem to be working too well..." Lu Chi muttered to himself, "How did she end up with such a little brat when she was supposed to contact someone..."
"I heard it again!"
"Go upstairs. She's inside. Don't shout or touch her!"
"oh..."
Bo Chunyu thought to herself, "For Bo Caiyan's sake and my own life, I'll endure it." She rushed into the room and slammed the door shut.
Lu Chi looked at Xiao Bai: "Bai, you've seen it, right? No need for amputation or skin grafts or anything like that, right?"
Eighth Master laughed: "She's just a veterinarian; she's lucky if she keeps someone from dying. What can she possibly know? Young Master, asking her this and that is just asking a pointless question, isn't it?"
Qiao Shao and the others looked up at a 45-degree angle, their shoulders and heads twitching rapidly.
"Eighth Master, you! You all! Humph!" The military doctor, pale-faced and red-eared, said, "The young master gave her very good medicine. A normal person should be able to get up and move around by now. It's just that her body isn't in good enough yet. But if she stays in the hospital for a while, she'll be fine!"
Qiao Shao rolled out a few dumpling wrappers, then suddenly asked, "Grandpa, do you think there might be a hidden path between Yakutsk and here, or perhaps a new one has already been formed?"
Lu Chi said, "That's not true. If she had gone in, she could have ended up anywhere with just one step. If you really want to quantify it, you can only say she was lucky!"
"That's true..." Qiao Shao slowly let out a sigh of relief: "Aren't you going to Yakutsk this time to see how things are going?"
Lu Chi was visibly too lazy to bother with him and completely uninterested: "I'm not going. I only have a few days off, and school starts on the sixth day of the new year!"
evil creature!
What kind of school did you attend?!
Amidst the sounds of the Spring Festival Gala that no one paid attention to, the group finished making dumplings. Some boiled water, heated and cooked dishes, while others set up tables and served wine. Lu Chi waited for a while, then put on his clothes and went to the yard to connect all the boxes of fireworks with fuses. He lit a cigarette, leaned against a tree, and stared blankly, smoking it idly.
Eighth Master followed him out: "Grandpa, something went wrong?"
"Hmm? No!" Lu Chi glanced at his watch again, put his hands together, lit the fuse, and the thick blue-green wire hissed and sparked as it moved very slowly: "This is the first time I've picked up a living person. I still have to go into the mountains to take a look tomorrow. I've been so focused on rescuing people that I don't want to forget anything I shouldn't have."
"Boom boom boom~"
At midnight, fireworks soared into the sky, and as soon as the commotion started, the villages on the hillsides several ridges below followed suit, with firecrackers and fireworks exploding incessantly.
Lu Chi tossed his cigarette butt aside: "Everyone! Let's eat dumplings!"
"A few bites?"
"all!"
After finishing their New Year's Eve dumplings, Qiao Shao and the others, who were quite drunk, left. Lu Chi, who hadn't slept all night, was busy reheating dishes at 3:30 in the morning. This woke up Bo Chunyu, who was in a daze, and she tiptoed into the kitchen following the noise, rambling incoherently, "Um, the shepherd's purse dumplings were pretty good, so, this isn't a ghost story?"
"What kind of weird story is this?"
"So...what department are they...? Uh...can I not ask about this...? What are you supposed to do?"
"Sometimes things or people will sneak out from there, either to raise them or to get rid of them." Lu Chi threw a piece of wood into the stove. "It's not much different from going to work. It's like, kind of like being a zookeeper. Sometimes you might even have to deal with poaching."
"Poaching?"
"That's roughly the gist of it. What's your relationship with her?"
"Her great-aunt, her best friend since childhood, her manager... well, like you, I feel like a zookeeper too, sometimes I have to keep an eye on poaching. Why are you cooking so early?"
"There are people offering New Year's greetings."
"Wow, you seem to be from a very high generation..."
"You know too much!"
"?"
Upon hearing this, Bo Chunyu subconsciously shrank her neck and pursed her lips. This person really doesn't think he's funny, does he?
