Chapter 306 Because I Believe in You
The next morning, before dawn, Erza kicked open the door to the Chase family's house.
"Hey you guys, the guild leader's going to announce the S-rank mage exam results in a couple of days, how come you're in the mood to sleep here?!"
The stern rebuke, as terrifying as a demon's, jolted Natsu awake from his deep sleep on the living room floor.
"I finally dreamt of fighting ten thousand dragons, but which bastard dared to—love! Good morning, Lady Erza~!"
The moment Natsu opened his eyes and saw Erza's face, his morning grumpiness vanished, and his wide-eyed gaze was clearer than a mirror.
"Making such a racket first thing in the morning, are you a dog? Good morning, Lady Erza!"
The sleepy, bachelor Gray was also startled by the sudden appearance of the "monster," and immediately became a good boy, hugging Natsu tightly. "We had a good time together today too!"
"Hey~ Erza, didn't you just say you were going to treat us to fish?" Happy rubbed his eyes.
Erza's simple "King's Squint" was enough to completely wake him up, and he straightened his back ramrod straight.
"Where are Lucy and Wendy? I took on a regular S-rank commission; the location is in a town north of Magnolia."
"They went back to their rented room across the river last night."
"Okay, then let's go wake them up and set off immediately."
Without giving the two people and the cat time to react, Erza packed them up and took them away, stuffing them into a magical four-wheeled vehicle parked on the street, which was filled with all kinds of luggage.
After last night's small meeting about the S-class assessment list, she had similar thoughts to Gildarts and wanted to make a final push with the three strong candidates, Nazgre and Lucy.
And so, amidst Lucy's bewildered exclamation in her pajamas, the magical four-wheeled vehicle sped off toward the commissioned location.
At the same time, at Magnolia train station, the whistle blew, and the first train departed on time.
Inside the VIP compartment at the front of the train.
"I never expected you to volunteer to come to the Council of Councillors with me."
Makarov picked up the cup of black tea in front of him, took a sip, and looked at Chess sitting opposite him with a look of satisfaction. "We really should get used to the chairman's work process in advance."
"Hey, old man, don't overthink it!"
Chase quickly retorted, "I just wanted to see how Crawford would react to this incident, and also to hear about Ultear's return."
These two things can actually be categorized as one: having Urudia keep an eye on Crawford.
"Speaker Crawford?"
Makarov sensed the undisguised hostility in Chase's tone, slowly put down his teacup, and his expression turned serious. "That guy does have a problem; he hesitated on the decision to send troops to attack the Demon's Heart."
They even know such detailed information?
Chase sensed something was amiss and asked doubtfully, "Old man, isn't your information a bit too well-informed?"
"Well, even in the council, there are councilors like Ms. Belluno who are close to our guild, right?" Makarov coughed twice, scratching his head and trying to evade the question.
"I see." Chess saw through it but didn't say anything.
After destroying the demon's heart and erecting a monument for Hades, it was already late at night when they returned.
Although Bellno's attitude shifted from being a pacifist to Fairy Tail because of Gajeel, he simply didn't believe that she would tell Old Man about the decision late at night!
Old man Yajima and Urutia might be able to do so, but unfortunately one has already retired and the other has just returned, so they have no idea about the internal situation of the council.
Therefore, it seems that someone else was passing on the information, such as Dolanbart, who worked in the intelligence department of the Council, also known as Meester.
Of course, it could also be other eyeliners that Chase is unaware of.
The fact that he sent Mester as an undercover agent shows that Old Ma doesn't trust the council unconditionally as he seems on the surface. He maintains a basic level of vigilance to ensure that the guild won't be disbanded in a muddle one day.
Thinking of this, Chase asked, "It sounds like you're not particularly surprised that the Council will postpone its deployment?"
Upon hearing this, Makarov did not give an immediate answer, but instead glanced at the receding scenery outside the train window.
A few seconds later, his eyes remained indifferent as he slowly spoke:
"Managers who are high up find it very difficult to accept their subordinates slipping out of their control."
"Although we won't do that, cooperating with Fiore's strongest conglomerate has inadvertently strengthened the guild's power and prestige. They probably just have a sense of crisis out of boredom."
"Therefore, informing the council in advance that we are going to destroy the heart of the devil is more of a procedural requirement to avoid various troubles later on."
Don't let Lao Ma's seemingly unserious demeanor fool you; he might be seen rummaging through photos of beautiful women at the bar, but only he knows the true amount of effort he puts into the guild.
Otherwise, Naz Elfman and even troublemakers like Chase would have long been labeled as public enemies of the wizarding world!
This is precisely why Chase avoids the position of chairman like the plague.
He really couldn't do things that required following the rules, especially when the opponent was someone so weak that he could be crushed with a single punch!
However, on the other hand, if Old Ma had already guessed that they would have to fight alone, then...
"If that's the case, why did you ultimately decide to launch a full-scale attack on the Demon's Heart?" Chase asked curiously.
He knew Hades' fatal weakness because he had read the original work, and also had Osiris's Sky Dragon as his strongest trump card.
But where did the old man get his confidence that he could defeat the heart of the demon without any casualties?
"Because the situation was urgent, and Natsu and the others were at their most motivated, they had no choice but to act. And more importantly..."
Makarov turned his gaze from the distance to Chess and smiled, "The attack plan was your idea."
"What parent would doubt their child's judgment, you idiot!"
Sunlight streamed in through the window, making the old man's aged smile appear exceptionally radiant.
Without any shrewd calculations or careful planning, he simply trusted Chess and unhesitatingly staked the fate of the entire guild!
"Old man" Chase was deeply moved.
Unexpectedly, Makarov's expression changed instantly. He reached out and grabbed Makarov's collar, spitting as he spoke: "However! Only an idiot would do something like turning up an entire forest upside down. You'd better watch your mouth from now on!"
Even now, recalling the terrifying moment when the Destroyer Dragon unleashed its magic, he still feels lingering fear.
"Aha, ahaha, that's also to ensure the heart can be destroyed successfully."
Cheston immediately lost his temper and could only awkwardly smile and spread his hands, letting Old Ma do whatever he wanted.
