Chapter 13 Fat Sister-in-Law
Chapter 13 Fat Sister-in-Law
The blade was enveloped in that hand and pulled in the opposite direction, a finger's width away from Tang Xiaoguo's neck.
A finger's width of space is enough.
"Let go!" the fat man shouted.
The man with the knife paused, startled. He looked down at his blade; a chubby hand had appeared on it, its color gleaming faintly with a metallic sheen under the light. He tried to press the knife down, but it wouldn't budge. He tried to push it forward, but it wouldn't move an inch. The blade was stuck in his palm, as if it were embedded in a steel groove.
But instead of letting go, he loosened his grip on Tang Xiaoguo's left arm and gripped the knife hilt with both hands.
Tang Xiaoguo slid off in front of him and fell to the ground. Chen Shi rushed over, picked her up, and took three steps back.
The man roared and suddenly pulled the knife out of the fat man's palm.
The knife was forcibly pulled out; it wasn't that the fat man had loosened his grip, but rather that the man possessed immense strength. The blade scraped against his hardened palm, producing a piercing sound. Pang Daqiang's expression remained unchanged, but his eyes narrowed slightly. This man was definitely not an ordinary person, because an ordinary person couldn't draw that knife.
After the man drew his knife, he swung it backhand.
The blade sliced diagonally across the fat man's right abdomen. His coat ripped open, a gash running from his ribs to his waist, revealing a gray lining beneath the dark blue fabric.
Pang Daqiang looked down at the opening.
The man slashed again. The second cut came from the left, slicing horizontally towards Pang Daqiang's shoulder. Pang Daqiang didn't move, not because he couldn't dodge, but because he was still looking at the tear in his clothes. The blade grazed his left shoulder, adding another cut.
One line on the right abdomen, and one line on the left shoulder.
The fat man slowly raised his head and looked at the person who had ruined his coat.
He then flew into a rage.
The fat man suddenly turned around, pressed his entire back against the man's body, grabbed the man's hands with both hands to immobilize him, then hooked his right foot around the man's ankle, and fell backward like a wall collapsing.
The ground shook. The man struggled beneath him for a few seconds, then stopped moving.
The fat man stood up, pressed one hand against the back of the man's neck, and with the other hand snatched the knife and threw it away.
Two patrol officers then rushed up the stairs.
"Fifth Group, Bureau of Management, Pang Daqiang." He introduced himself, nodded to the patrol officers, and said, "The man is yours. The knife is under the pillar."
The patrolman took the man, quickly handcuffed him, exchanged a few hurried words with the fat man, and then took him away.
The fat man dusted off his knees and was about to say something to Chen Shi when he noticed his coat.
He fell silent. A profound sadness welled up within him and spread.
Chen Shi was startled and quickly helped him up.
"Fatty, are you alright?"
The fat man stared at the two cuts for three seconds. He opened his mouth, then closed it again. He reached out and touched the edge of the cuts, as if to confirm whether it was an illusion. Then he looked up at Chen Shi, his eyes filled with a deep sorrow of being betrayed.
"This outfit," Pang Daqiang said, pulling out his phone, "was bought for me by your sister-in-law. I've only worn it for a week. She said it makes me look slimmer. I need to call the patrol team; they have to pay for it."
Chen Shi immediately decided he didn't want to talk to him anymore.
Tang Xiaoguo was still in her mother's arms. Chen Shi walked over and squatted down.
"Tang Xiaoguo".
The little girl still had tears clinging to her eyelashes.
"That uncle was just playing a cops and robbers game. We were the police, and he was the bad guy. Now the game is over, and the police officers won."
She blinked but didn't say anything.
"That uncle is actually sick," Chen Shi explained. "Something is bothering him, which is why he's running around and shouting. He didn't really mean to hurt you just now."
Tang Xiaoguo sobbed. The wisp of pink light above her head gradually unfolded.
Then she whispered to Chen Shi, "Thank you, Uncle."
"Call me brother," Chen Shi corrected instinctively, then smiled.
The two brothers declined the little girl's mother's thanks and left the mall.
"You arrived pretty quickly?" Chen Shi asked.
"Don't even mention it. Your sister-in-law was cooking when she realized she was out of soy sauce. That's why I came out to buy some, and then I got your call." The fat man then slapped his thigh. "Damn it, I ran off without paying for the soy sauce, and I ran so fast I don't even remember where I threw the bottle."
The two went back to the convenience store, paid the fare they had skipped, and bought an extra bottle of soy sauce and several cans of beer.
"Come over to my place today, let's have a drink," the fat man said.
Pang Daqiang's home was on the fourth floor of an old apartment building. The hallway was dimly lit, and the walls were covered with little GG stickers. When he reached the third floor, the fat man stopped. He unfolded the jacket under his armpits, first dusting it off from head to toe, then bending down to dust off his trouser legs, then turning to the side to dust off the back of his shoulders, and finally looking down to check the back of his knees.
Chen Shi asked, puzzled, "Are you scanning for fingerprints or cleaning dust?"
"Survival skills. You know nothing about that."
Upon reaching the door, the fat man adjusted the angle of the folded coat again, with the tear facing inward, and tucked it under his left arm.
He knocked gently on the door. Three knocks, then a pause, then another knock. This rhythm reminded Chen Shi of secret codes used in spy movies.
The door opened.
The plump woman stood at the doorway, a full head shorter than Pang Daqiang, with a petite figure. She wore loose loungewear, her hair casually tied in a ponytail, and held a spatula in her hand.
The fat woman's gaze swept over Pang Daqiang's entire body, examining every exposed inch of his skin before she nodded in relief. Her eyes then fell on the overly neatly folded jacket under Pang Daqiang's armpit.
She tilted her head to look at the coat, then at the fat man's face.
"Folding it so neatly, are you afraid I won't notice it's torn?"
The fat man's opening remarks suddenly caught in his throat.
Chen Shi peeked out from behind him: "Hello, sister-in-law! I'm here to freeload a meal."
When the fat woman saw Chen Shi's face, her expression instantly switched from interrogation to surprise: "Little Shi is here! The last time I saw you, you were still in school."
Then she quickly regained her composure and nudged the fat man's stomach with a spatula.
"clothing."
The fat man respectfully handed it over with both hands. The fat woman unfolded her coat, revealing two noticeable rips. She paused for a moment, then asked with genuine curiosity:
"How did you break through this time?"
"It's hooked on the shelf." The fat man kept his eyes straight ahead, determined not to make eye contact with her.
"Did you check the left side of the shelf first, then the right side?"
"This shelf is quite long," the fat man stubbornly insisted.
The plump woman said seriously, "Last time your shirt was torn and you told me it was caught on the chair armrest. The time before that, your pants were torn and you said it was caught on a nail. This time it's the shelf?"
"It really is a shelf." The fat man thought he could hold on a little longer.
The chubby woman suddenly laughed. It wasn't an angry laugh, but the kind that says, "I knew it all along, but you're still acting," which was quite cute.
"Alright, stop standing at the door. Come in, wash your hands, and eat."
There were six dishes and a soup on the table. Chen Shi took a bite of the braised pork and said, "Sister-in-law, your cooking is much better than what we have in the cafeteria."
"Stop bragging. If you like it, come back often," the plump woman said, putting another piece on his plate. "Eat more. Look how skinny you are, like a monkey."
The fat man was focused on eating his rice, a slight smirk playing on his lips.
The plump woman turned around and glanced at him.
"What are you laughing at? A piece of clothing that cost 135 yuan, worn for less than a week."
The fat man muttered with his head down, "I saved someone today."
"You always do this." The plump woman put down her chopsticks, her voice suddenly softening. "Do you know that every time I see your clothes are torn, my first reaction isn't to worry about how much the clothes cost, but to check if there's blood inside the tear?"
Both the fat man and Chen Shi stopped eating.
"You're really not hurt." The fat man's voice softened as he put down his chopsticks and rolled up his sleeves to show her. "Look. There's not a single mark. That person's knife bounced off when it struck."
The fat woman looked at his arm, picked up her chopsticks again, and put the fattest piece of braised pork into his bowl.
"Have a meal."
After dinner, the plump woman cleared away the dishes, while the two men sat on the balcony, chatting about what had happened that day.
After recounting the general events, both men fell silent for a moment before Chen Shi finally spoke first.
"I saw color today."
The fat man didn't respond, waiting for him to continue.
"Everyone has a different color on their head. The person with the knife has a dark red, turbulent, messy one. The little girl has a pink one, very delicate and pale, and she's been trembling. When you rushed in, I saw that you were golden, like gold."
The fat man was silent for a moment, then said, "I'm a man of few words but great talent."
Chen Shi almost burst out laughing.
The fat man's expression turned serious. "You just said you couldn't tell a single joke today."
"That's right."
"But you still got that person to talk a lot. Before I rushed in, a mentally unstable person, with a knife to the little girl's neck, actually stopped and talked to you. You've already dragged me here."
Chen Shi didn't continue the conversation, but instead said, "That person said there was someone talking in his head. I roughly understood a bit of it; maybe someone imprisoned him, and then he escaped."
"You don't think that's just wishful thinking?"
"Not really."
The fat man thought for a moment and said, "I'll talk to the boss tomorrow."
"Um."
Just then, Chen Shi's phone rang.
Zhuang Wen's voice came through the receiver, his speech a beat faster than usual: "Chen Shi, are you free to come to the lab now?"
