Chapter 76 The Detroit Gallows
Chapter 76 The Detroit Gallows
Chapter 76 The Detroit Noose (4 Updates)
"A 10-minute walk is considered far?"
Sophia said with a smile, "I parked the car in front of the Bane's house."
"For me, any place that's more than two steps away is considered far," Bane began to ramble.
After making that casual remark, he gestured with his chin towards Sophia and asked, "Would you like to come in and sit down?"
Sophia blinked, looked Bane up and down, hesitated for a while, and then checked her watch: "I'm just an assistant."
"So, I have something to ask you about work. Come on," Bane said, opening the door and getting out of the car.
Seeing this, Sofia hesitated for a moment, but finally gritted her teeth and followed.
Before the romantic atmosphere could even begin after entering the room, Bane had already learned about the new job opportunity from Sophia.
"So, besides our association, other associations also received budgets?"
"That's right." Sophia, dressed in a long black dress, nodded as she sat on the sofa.
How many are there?
"With you four, we basically cover the major local NG0s in Detroit."
After saying that, Sofia added, "Also, your budget is the smallest; the other three associations received 600,000 in start-up funding."
"Your father didn't say any of that."
Upon hearing this, Sofia lowered her eyes, thinking to herself: If my father had said everything, how would I find a topic to talk about and get closer to you? Of course, I deliberately didn't say anything.
While inwardly grumbling, she outwardly remained calm and continued her introduction: "Actually, the foundation originally only had the budget for those three associations. Your 400,000 was applied for by my father."
"You mean, if I take this 40 and don't make a difference, your father will be held accountable by the foundation?"
"You won't necessarily be held accountable, but it's inevitable that competitors within the foundation will use it against you. However, my father isn't worried about that; he has great faith in your abilities."
As they spoke, Sophia kept observing Bane's reaction.
She hoped to see some positive feedback on Bane's face, such as being touched by Twisted Fate's trust in him.
Unfortunately, Bane did not react at all.
He simply asked expressionlessly, "Is there any other information?"
What information do you want to know?
"What are the topics raised by the other associations? Did they plan them themselves, or were they assigned by your foundation?"
"The demands of the issue align with yours; the core objective is to attack Ford. As for where they will approach it, that's up to them. However, I think those three associations will join forces."
Why?
"Because the same person is in charge of allocating budgets to these three companies."
"Is that person considered your father's rival?"
"I suppose so. They're all vying for the position of regional director for the Midwest region. The performance of the Detroit noose will determine who gets the job."
"The Detroit noose?"
"This is the code name for the major investors behind Detroit shorting the market."
Hearing this, Bane scratched his chin. So, it seemed those big investors were really planning something big in Detroit. And the Detroit NGOs were their vanguard.
Given this, what role should I play in this chaos?
How can we take advantage of this chaos to maximize our benefits?
Also, is it possible to use this chaos to push Clarissa, Thea, Dahl, and even Clarissa's brother Kieran, as well as other personal connections, to the top?
As he pondered, Bane paced back and forth in the living room.
Meanwhile, in a bar, Conrad, the executive director of another large Detroit NGO, the Michigan Green Association, was drinking with Jimmy.
"Dude, I really understand you. I've dealt with Bane too, and he always mocked me, calling me Mr. Bullfrog. He's a rude bitch."
Conrad put his arm around Jimmy's shoulder and continued, "To tell you the truth, all the big NGOs in Detroit are now ready to take on Ford."
"Since you have evidence of Ford's scrap yard, you can hand it over to me."
"If you hand it over to me, I guarantee I'll assemble a team for you within our association, so you can compete with that damned Bane for business!"
"Stealing business?" The drunken Jimmy sneered, not believing he could outdo him.
However, Conrad's comment about Mr. Bullfrog reminded him that while he couldn't steal business, he could steal an idea.
So he said, "I don't have the evidence you want, and I have no interest in competing with Bane for business. I'm just waiting—"
As he spoke, he suddenly shut his mouth.
"Wait for what?" Conrad asked curiously.
"It's nothing," Jimmy waved his hand.
What he really meant was that he was waiting for Howard to go to jail, because once Howard was in jail, he could then go and win over Howard's wife, Jennifer.
Jimmy shook his head to clear his head and then changed the subject.
He continued, "However, I have something to tell you that might be helpful to you."
"What is it?" Conrad quickly leaned closer to listen.
"Back when we were working on the bullfrog protests, that bitch Bane came up with a brilliant plan, but we ended up working with Ford, so we didn't get to use it."
"A plan? Is it designed to counter Ford?"
"That's right, it was designed to deal with Ford. The plan was called—Girl Saves the Bullfrog." Jimmy began to try his best to recall.
"Bullfrogs? Damn it, don't mention bullfrogs to me. We have no interest in protecting any bullfrogs right now." Conrad felt uncomfortable just hearing the word "bullfrog."
"No, no, no, listen to me, the point isn't the bullfrog, it's the girl."
"girl?"
"Yes, he said we could find a thin little girl to perform CPR on the bullfrogs —"
Jimmy began to follow his memory and recounted to Conrad the original plan that Bane had proposed when he first traveled through time.
Conrad initially had some instinctive resistance, but as he listened, his eyes grew brighter and brighter.
For some reason, Jimmy found himself getting more and more into the story.
At the end, he slammed his hand on the table: "If you can mold this girl into a symbol of pollution, into an environmental star resisting Ford's pollution, then you've succeeded!"
After saying that, he gulped down a mouthful of water.
She started crying again, muffledly: "Fuck! Why can't I think of this solution? Even if I could, I couldn't do it—"
"You've had too much to drink, go back to sleep." After hearing this suggestion, Conrad didn't want to waste any more time on Jimmy.
He left in a hurry after saying just one sentence.
A girl with lead poisoning saves a bullfrog?
No wonder that guy could become the executive director of the Great Lakes Environmental Justice Association; he certainly has some skills.
Our three associations have come up with so many angles, but none of them are as good as this one.
It was copied.
If I didn't copy this, I'd be doing myself a disservice.
I wonder what that damn Bane will do when he sees that his own plan has been used.
I can't wait to think about it.
Meanwhile, Bane, unaware that someone was planning to copy his plan, was still pacing around the living room, working on his calculations.
Sofia didn't disturb him, and sat quietly on the sofa watching. As she watched, her eyelids began to droop.
When Bane came to his senses, he found that she had fallen asleep, leaning on the armrest of the sofa.
"She can fall asleep like this?" Bane crouched down quietly, staring intently at her eyelids and listening to her breathing.
"Goodness, he's really asleep?" Bane chuckled.
I looked at my watch again. It was almost 2 a.m. Logically speaking, I had been busy since morning, so why wasn't I sleepy at all?
It wasn't the kind of sleeplessness that comes with insomnia, but rather the kind that comes with abundant energy.
Could it be because of the [Constitution 14]?
While pondering, Bane went upstairs, took a blanket from the bedroom closet, and gently covered Sophia with it.
Then, they lifted her feet, which were lying diagonally on the floor, onto the sofa.
Afterwards, Bane went to check the doors and windows carefully to see if they were locked properly.
The curtains were drawn, a corridor light was left on, and a military dagger was placed within Sofia's reach.
Bane then tiptoed upstairs.
Unbeknownst to him, Sophia, who was on the sofa, had already woken up while he was covering himself with the blanket.
She simply lay on the sofa and silently watched Bane's actions.
Time passed second by second.
After taking a shower, Bane lay down on the bed, intending to go to sleep.
He thought he would need a while to fall asleep. But to his surprise, the thought of sleeping had barely crossed his mind for a few seconds before he drifted off to sleep.
I don't know how long I slept like that.
Bane opened his eyes in bed.
comfortable.
A kind of indescribable comfort.
Looking back on the decades that have passed across two lifetimes, Bane has never felt that he has rested so well.
Unlike usual grogginess after waking up, my body wasn't stiff or aching all over. Instead, I felt a surge of energy throughout my body.
He reached out and touched the phone on the bedside table, then looked at it.
The time [6:27] is clearly displayed on the screen.
he----
Now I only need to sleep four hours.
